I am engaged, she is in college and I am just starting an internship with GM. What is a way I can serve my country without being deployed a year at a time? I know a lot about the Military, I almost enlisted out of high school but than she made it clear she wanted to get married and other problems came up and I just want to serve in any way I can now, what else is there besides enlisting or joining the reserves?

Well, you could see if there are any volunteer agencies near you where you could volunteer some time on weekends or evenings. Lacking that a few bucks to my favorite charities would be really nice.

Be a Big Brother, volunteer to read to elderly at a home, serve meals in a homeless shelter, all of these I mention are a part of serving. You don't have to be in the Military to serve your country, there are a lot of ways of serving.

Become a Firefighter,Policeman, teacher. Be a Mentor to a child.

you do not have to join the military to serve your country. However, if you do, there is no getting out of deploying, period.
