You should read an English translation of the Quran. I would suggest the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation. There are some websites where they will mail you one for free, you have to Google for them. The Quran is not like the bible, and does not read like the bible. You'll be very impressed.

In Islam, it is srickly not encourageable to learn Islam by your ownself. Get advise from a knowledgeable and open-minded Muslim or just go the to nearest mosque, I'm sure they'll be happy to help you with anything.

Qur'an translation is good, but reading some light-easy books on Islam or Islamic history should be a good start.

The best start is with the Quran. I would recommend the translation of Abdullah Yusuf Ali or that of Pickthall, or better, both! One translation is not always enough because the style of the Quran is so rich that it a sentence can have more than one meaning. One translator would capture a meaning, while the other translator would capture another.

Also have a look at these websites:
www.islamicity.com - here you have the Quran, even in audio:
http://www.islamicity.com/mosque/quran/
http://qa.sunnipath.com/
www.islamonline.net
www.kuftaro.org
http://www.sunnah.org/

Also it would help to go to a nearby mosque and ask your questions. If you live in the US or Canada, you can look it up by the ZIP code here: www.islamicfinder.org

If the guys sound weird or unwelcoming, then just find another mosque. Beware especially of the followers of some extremist ideologies, especially those who include in their discourse the word "innovation" or "bidaa"

Take care and may God bless your way.

Peace/salaam.

reading quran seems to be the straightest way. But be aware not to get angry during reading it.
I am a Muslim and used to pray every day, because my father told me it is good. till one day I decided to read quran. after it I got so much angry that I stopped to pray anymore, and preferred to meditate instead of praying. then I started to research a little bit about other religions, and found them all the same.
I finally decided not to waste my time in any religion, because there are better ways in the world to find my questions answers.

Sultan.org brother

Or for a more personal approach, try going to the nearest Masjid to you and try talking to the Imam and he'll teach you all about Islam.

I've read them all and have studied them all and I could only recommend that you learn about every religion and then make a knowledgeable decision to stay far clear of them all. Religion has only succeeded in separation of world cultures and causing the needless deaths of innocent people. Religion has become a sickness of humanity and has taken the focus away from God. From sacrificial lambs to sacrificial virgins religious based killing goes on. Now it's holy wars causing countless deaths. We've worshiped everything from the sun, totem poles, phallic symbols and numerous human deities. Almost every religion has people worshiping a human who is perceived to be God. Basically it is a ridiculous concept in my opinion of course. People are not God never were God and will never be God but just arrogant beings in the animal kingdom desperate for praise. Kudos for everything, accolades for every achievement, awards, certificates, stars and plaques, medals and ribbons. The only problem is we are still embroiled in global war, torture, genocide and countless religious persecutions. I know this is not going to be a popular answer but anyone can look around and see how true it is. From the Salem Witch Hunt to the many Crusades of Catholicism and from the Jihad to maybe you want to execute me for heresy or blasphemy, it's all a waste of energy.
