I last lived in MA in the late 90s... at that point you needed an FID card that you'll have to pass an FID safety course to obtain, and is then issued at the whim of the local police chief. You'll need the FID card to buy either ammo or a non-large capacity gun (gun must not hold 10 or more shells). Handgun purchases are more involved, you have to pass a handgun safety course and a class A or class B license to carry course plus have an FID card for a revolver, any handgun with a clip larger than 9 shells requires a class A license to carry certification (obviously REALLY hard to get)

Well, first of all, IF you are an ex-con, you can't buy/own/possess one. With that said.....
Best thing you can do, is open up the phone book and look under gun shops. Pick one and call. Tell them you are a first time buyer and interested in knowing what legal stuff is involved.
Federally, you fill you a form 4473 which asks a bunch of questions. One of them is a domestic violence question - if you've had a restraining order or been 'convicted' of domastic violence, you can't guy a gun. After filling, they call the Feds Background number and do an instant check on you.
State wise, I don't know. If a pistol, I'm sure that MA has to have some kind of registration form for the state (heck, maybe even a long gun).
But your best bet is to talk to a liscenced gun dealer.

If it is like anywhere else (which MA probably isn't) you just go fill out some papers and get an instant background check. Then, you walk away with it.
Knowing MA though, you probably need to do the background check, then wait a week, then buy some special lock to keep it in..... it is easier to just move than to buy a handgun in an anti-gun state.

I don't know Mass law but I think you just have to pass a background check if you are buying a hunting rifle. If you are buying a pistol, I think you need a permit to carry from the police department.
