for death metal? do you mean REAL death metal, like Nile or Morbid Angel or Death, or do you just mean the heavy sounding music that non-DM fans CALL death metal (such as atreyu XP)
for real death metal study your harmonic minor scale, your natural minor scale, and the modes - my personal favorite is the dorian mode, but locrian and phyrigian and lydian and mixolydian, etc. are all useful. also study the use of chromatic passing tones, and as your knowledge of theory builds, study purposeful uses of dissonance. all of these will make for good death metal guitar.
of course, pentatonic scales are useful in just about all styles of music, and while it's good to know major scales, the major scales are more suited to rock than to DM - DM uses a darker, more evil sounding, minor based sound.
also practice playing with speed - its a big part of death metal. it shouldnt be all you do, knowing how to play well slowly is also highly useful. you should be able to do both.
playing in this style will require you to warm up your fingers so that you can stretch and move them properly without damaging your finger/arm muscles and being unable to play. good warmup exercises can be found in guitar magazines and also online. if you have any questions about anything i've mentioned, feel free to e-mail me: archangelofcynicism@yahoo.com

RE:
Good scales for death metal?
Are there any good scales I can practice if I'm really wanting to play death metal. Mostly for sweep picking and such.

These days you can learn how to play guitar over the internet. Check out Mark McKenzie's guitar video lessons here: http://www.jamoramaguitar.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced guitar players. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine.
I was able to improve my skills in just under 4 weeks and I am an intermediate-to-advanced guitar player; I've been playing guitar for the past 6 years and I was on stage with my band a lot of times.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a pro guitar teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me. Good luck!

Scales are scales, just do them all, major and minor. Arpeggios and pentatonic scales too. Just do them every day. (what's 'sweep picking'?)
