Shooting games these days often put the player in the shoes of the soldier in WW2, Vietnam, the Iraq War, and so on. Is it disrespectful to buy these games and play them. READ THIS PART PLEASE. I really want to buy some of these games because they are fun, but do not want to do wrong and disrespect those that have served their country in the most honorable way anyone can. What should I do? One such developer of video games has a military consultant on the game and helped aid in the process of making the video game. This military consulant, Capt. Dale Dye, actually served in Vietnam, received three purple hearts, survived 31 major combat operations, and received a bronze star for valor. Games that involve real wars that have happened may not be all that disrespectful to him. Do games involving fictional story lines, but that still involve the Marines and some what of a resemblence of current events such as Call of Duty 4; disrespectful?

Not at all, there is no disrespect in playing these games, as long as you keep in mind that they are games.

I have an older one that has all the political events of WW2 and you can start as any country that was involved. there's no snipers or even tanks to control but you control the actual units , supplies, manufacturing, even rations to your civilians. I have actually taken over the US while playing as Germany. (never could beat Russia though)

No. They are just so inaccurate in their portrayals that they give the user a false impression. Dale Dye is an old acquaintance of mine. But, his being a technical advisor doesn't imbue the programmers with any sense of reality about combat either.
Dale also served as the technical advisor for the movie "Platoon" and I kidded him about using recordings of military radio transmissions in the movie which were using Marine jargon, when the movie was about an Army unit. In his defense he said those were the only tapes he had available.
Enjoy the games. Just don't think they are real.

I am a Vietnam vet and those are games and see nothing disrespectful in it. I have some WW2 games and been the Germans and i try very hard to win and usually do and had father and uncles in WW2. Anyone who would say that it is disrespectful is much too thin skinned and we have too much of that already. Play your games and enjoy them-they are games not real life. Even played the Russians once in a board game and won.

Not at all. Its meant for fun & everyone knows that. Also, it might get some people who would have never knew or cared about a certain war or conflict & get intersted. The reason people play these games is becuase inside they want to be like them, which is honorable for the people who were in the conflicts because theirs people who wanted or want to be like them.
