BUT, since I am new and consider myself a professional how do I deal with these small minded people? It has been brought to my attention I am having lunch and sex with an IT staffer but everyday I have lunch in the breakroom with my coworkers--so it is false. My concern is my reputation. I'm still on my 90 days. I work in a retirement community and depts. are scattered around the office building. These people who may be spreading the rumors do not know me yet and work in different departments. I feel my only option is to quit when new jobs open up after Jan 1. Any ideas on how to flush these people out or deal with them. I told my boss what I heard. I feel comfortable confronting people face to face, if needed. I kinda of feel sorry for these pathetic people and at this point embarrased to be working with them. There seems to be little if no threat of firing bad employees there, which adds to the frustration. I am just taken aback at how petty and hurtful these people are. Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback!

Co worker who got me the job got a call today -told the person on the phone I eat lunch with them, have a boyfriend and told them to stop it and hung up. My avatar is the opposite of me re: the scowl. It is not a good joke, sorry. I am basically young-looking for 40s, college educated, friendly, helpful, team-player and polished. I think I now see the problem- I just need to be me and focus on that. I just want to make a good impression. (I am a recovering people-pleaser and try to get along with everyone) Never met with such negativity at start of a job...they wait to get to know me first...ha!!! just kidding. Will talk to HR to see options. Thanks for the reflection back..your feedback gave me things to think about how I come across and deal with things. I actually felt blessed when I saw the support from coworkers who heard the co-worker's phone call and some told me to go to HR while others said it is BS and ignore it and hope it goes away.

How do you KNOW these rumors are going around and to what extent? Something does not ring true here to me. If you have lunch with a group everyday, there is a good foundation of people who KNOW you aren't sleeping away your lunch hour.

Are you a bit paranoid? That is what my gut feeling is, and I'm normally right on. Your Avatar indicates a problem to me, why the scowl?

If you are being harassed already, there may be a reason for it, and certainly protesting "too much" won't stop the accusations. This isn't a normal situation, and if it is a recurring one in your life, learn from the past, or be destined to relive it.

Its a drag to have to work with such shallow people. Dealing with this the right way and staying in the right at all times will display itself as your defense. Its too bad when so called intelligent people can act so shamefully. If they would only realize how they degrade themselves by doing that.

I'd suggest you bring this matter to the human resources department or whomever has such authority and seek to have an investigation opened, as this kind of behavior can be defined as harassment, in the meantime, go about your duties, and avoid idle gossip with co-workers unless it is about your duties....

At any job there are toxic people.

I would ignore the whole scene and go about doing a good job.

If you confront people it will just exacerbate the situation.

Good Luck!

Unless you stand up and give a speech about yourself you can't change everyone's mind.

What you can do is let your actions speak for you.

The people who have a brain will see what kind of person you and and change their minds about you.

The rest of them....who really cares?

if you know who is spreading rumors about you, then by all means, confront that person. pull them aside, tell them you know they have been spreading rumors that are untrue and the boss has been notified. that person owes you an apology.

don't laugh. it's not funny, it's slander and unfortunately could cost you your job.
