I can't stand the plastic trays! My pup has chewed a big hole in his. The crate came from China so who knows what kind of carcinogens are in that plastic! Couldn't find a crate made in the USA. I found some metal replacement trays online but they are not the right size. I guess the plastic trays are just cheaper. That is probably the bottom line.

Because plastic is cheaper and doesn't rust. I wouldn't mind the plastic trays for my crates (honestly I'm quite happy with the durable heavy plastic tray in my smaller crate, the metal ones would probably ruin my floors anyway) but the one in my newest crate is AWFUL! It was such cheap, thin plastic that the weight of my 30lb puppy caused it to crack. I mean honestly, what were they thinking?! When I wrote to the company and complained they said that the crates were designed for the height/length of the dog and not the weight....clearly any dog that needs as much space as my large crate is GOING to weigh at LEAST 60lbs and maybe more than 100lbs. Now my dog has a thick dog bed in his crate so it doesn't much matter that the tray is cracked and has holes in it, but on the rare occasions that my dog does have accidents (always vomiting or diarrhea of course) it isn't contained.

I guess because they rust. You can still get them some places. I have special ordered some for my newest crates, because the plastic ones are HORRID!!!!!
Plastic is NOT easier to clean. Plastic is PORUS....meaning all kinds of things can live in it. And most of the plastic pans have tiny, tiny grooves in the plastic. Yet another place for bacteria to hide.

Do you mean stainless steel? That does not rust, but it changes temperature depending on the enviroment. I still prefer stainless steel, and they probably don't use it to save a buck.
