I have the .40 XD and I love it, you can pull my past posts and see all the good things I have to say about it. However, If you don;t want it to be powerful, you may want to opt for the 9MM.

It will not have as much force out of the barrell, or stopping power for that matter, but will be a great fun shooting gun.

A Springfield Armory XD 9mm has much less recoil than the .40 caliber. If you buy the ported model it is even less than a non-ported 9mm. I own the V-10 ported 9mm and I love it. It has next to nothing in recoil and it really helped improve my shooting and control. I also own the .45 Tactical XD.

The Px4 Storm that was mentioned is a great gun (at least for the 9mm) but .40 calibers in general just have too much snap recoil to them. They are not smooth like 9s or .45s

If you are looking for a pistol in the .22 caliber, you might take at the Ruger new model revolver. it has a .22 caliber & a .22 magnum cylinder. it is a single action & extremaly accurate.
with mine, i have killed rabbits at up to about 40 yds

No you want a Berreta 40 cal. Shoots great. I have the Px/4 Storm and I love it. So does anyone else who shoots it. Its small and holds 14 rounds.(15 with one in the chamber).

If you get one of their 1911's you can buy a .22 conversion kit for it.
