We want our kids to grow up with morals but one of the first thing they're taught is based on a lie. People do a lot of sneaking around and lying, all the while knowing that the kid's gonna find out anyway. As a kid, I remember wondering why there was a "Santa" in every store if there was supposed to be only one. I wondered what other things I was being lied to about. Years later I did the research....turns out it's a pagan holiday and Jesus wasn't even born on that day. More lies to perpetrate....

I think there is no harm in it for little kids. I never had kids so I can't say what I'd say or do w/ them. But I thought I'd tell them the truth. That it is a story in a book. That the real Christmas is about the birth of Jesus.

Santa (no matter how fake) has been with us for many generations. Why not keep the tradition? It doesn't harm anyone. Except when they finally grow up to know better and they try to burn your carpet out of anger.

In my mother's words; "how can people like Saint Nic? He's the biggest paedophile around, giving presents to children, yeah right... Something in return is what he's after!"

(she actually said this... and yes, she's an atheist.)

Anyway, I think Santy is harmless - contrary to my mother - because children tend to believe in things out of opportunism. They don't mind when it turns out there is no Santy, and usually they keep on pretending they believe in him anyway. And you couldn't imagine the amount of children that would lie in order to get a present anyway!

Personally I'd hate to be the parent who's kid just told the whole class santa isn't real.
