Probably the .17 Mach II. It is a llittle hotter than the .22 LR. another round would be the .22 mag. or the .17 HMR. Calibers such as the .25 acp or the .380 do not come in guns that are appropriate for hunting so I would not incloude them. The .32 Special is not a powerful round and you can still find pistols with good sights that are chamnbered for the .32 Special but ammo is sometime hard to find. The .32 fell out of favor many years ago and had been replaced to a large degree by the .38 Special. Once you get to the 9mm, the .38 Special, etc. youare completely out of the power range of the .22 LR. For your purposes, I think the two .17 calibers or the .22 WMR would be your best choices.

25 ACP is actually something of a step DOWN from 22 LR in terms of effectiveness, especially considering the little pocket pistols that normally chamber it. For hunting small game, there are some hard-to-find chamberings that are smaller, but for practical purposes one chambered in 32 H&R Magnum or 32-20 Winchester would be your next step up. If you're just starting and not adding to a 22 pistol you already have, then the obvious choice would be the Ruger Single-Six, which comes with a cylinder for 22 LR and another for 22 WMR. Note, though, that the 22 Magnum is incredibly loud for such a small round, and I'd recommend hearing protection even when hunting.

Well, first of all, what are you going to be hunting and how far do you plan to be from your target?
As mentioned, Ruger makes a revolver that shoots .22 Short, .22 LR and 22 Mag (different cylinder)- but it's only available (last I checked) in the single action model (like the old cowboy guns).
If you are going to shoot 'larger' animals, shot placement will be critical and the type of ammo you use. Granted, the hollow point in a 22 and a solid lead round doesn't seem that much different to me.
Well, the energy (power), is determined by the velocity of the round (fps) x weight (grains). I'd guess the .25 is next weakest. The 32 Auto is there also there.
There are a few choices out there, revolver rounds or semi auto rounds. But the more common ones will be easier to find at shops...

For a hunting handgun, you must bear in mind what is legal, and what is not.
In some states, it is unlawful to use a centerfire handgun for squirrels.
Some states require a minimum of .357 Magnum for handgun hunting.
Check with your state fish and game department.
The only readily available handgun calibers between .22 LR and .357 Magnum that are suitable for hunting are the .32-20 WCF and .32 H&R Magnum.
Ruger markets their Super Single-Six in .32 H&R Magnum, and if you are lucky, you can find a Ruger Buckeye - Blackhawk with .32-20 WCF and .32 H&R Magnum cylinders, these were a limited run made about 20 years ago.
The .25 ACP is not chambered in a handgun suitable for hunting, even if it is legal.
If you don't mind climbing real high off your wallet, you might find an antique Colt SAA chambered in .25-20. It will set you back a couple of grand at a minimum.

In the .22 caliber, you have .22 shorts, which is the weakest. ( you can't get any lower than this, without going to a pellet gun).
.22 long, then, .22 long rifle.
the next step up in the .22 caliber, is the .22 magnum.
Ruger , makes a revolver, that will shoot all 4
Ruger New Model Single Six.
has both the regular .22 cylinder as well as the .22 magnum cylinder

They do make hunting air rifles with hunting ammo that you can use for taking varmint sized game. That's got to be the weakest. Second is probably the 22 short. Graduate up to the 22 long.

Here are some weak things:
.22 Short. .22 LR .22 Stinger .22 SubSonic .25auto .32auto .17HMR Pellet guns.... .22LR is cheap and easy to find, more .22 ammo is made than any other type of ammo. If you can't get .22, you can't get ammo.
