I believe the government just took them off their farms and used them as forced laborers. Many, many died during the several years that wall was built. It is certainly one of the 7 wonders of the world. I walked part of the wall near Beijing, part of which was very steep and needed to hold a rail on the way down. There are still many Chinese people working very hard for very little money.. The Chinese people as a whole are so very, very nice. Their family values are what they used to be here many, many years ago.. The younger Chinese have one thought in mind when they work.. To make enough to support their parents in their old age.

They were recruited by the Emperor to help build the wall as a form of defence. The Chinese people were and are usually very loyal to their Emperors and generally to those in charge.
