Unless you have an extraordinary intellect simply listening to class lectures will not lead to great grades. You have to take notes that incorporate the main points your teacher has made in class and then you need to study them thoroughly. You have to memorize key facts like names, dates, places, et cetera, and then you have to constantly memorize additional data. And then when you get to non-mathematical and non-scientific subjects there is much more to know than facts.
But what strikes me as odd is your attitude. I may be misreading you, but most academically inclined people are not motivated to learn because of the prospect of good grades or praise although both are quite nice to receive. Most students do well because they want to know the laws of physics and how to apply them in real life. Or they really want to study the history of the United States because they want to understand the dynamics underlying The Revolutionary War or The Civil War and the like. In the final analysis good students are passionate students. They are passionate about learning for its own sake, not for the sake of good grades. And, paradoxically, it is that pure passion that leads to good grades.

You could prepare for the lesson beforehand (if you know what the teacher's going to be talking about) so when it comes to the actual class period, you'll know the basic background info, and will be able to absorb more and ask questions.
Or you could simply revise what you learnt in class on a weekly basis or something. :)
Good luck getting that A!

You listen in class but do you understand what you're learning?
It could be that you aren't a good test taker, that is, if you do bad on your tests. If so, you might have test anxiety or something like that.
