Does NASA have ranks? Like Major Tom. Or is that carried on if they retired as a Major in the military.

NASA is a civilian organization and does not have ranks. However, many of the astronauts ARE members of the military ands retain their military rank while working for NASA.

It's a government body, so there are Civil Service grade classifications based on seniority, experience, performance, etc.

But if you're thinking of something like military rank, and the strict hierarchy that goes with it, no.

Nasa ranks are Commander, pilot and mission specialist.

Each flight has :

One commander
One pilot
The rest are mission specialist.

Basicly, you have pilots and mission specialist.

Only a pilot can become a commander.
