Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said that converting to Islam eliminates what one has done before it.

According to that, the PAST sins of the person who converts to Islam will be forgiven. If he has done bad things to other people, then God will make sure that these people are compensated. If he has done spiritual errors, then becoming Muslim is the chance to start from zero.

However, becoming Muslim does not mean that one's future sins are forgiven as well. He has to strive to keep himself in the good path. He has to protect and improve his faith. He has to keep away from major sins (like murder, adultery, being bad to parents, etc). As for minor sins, one is prone to them anytime, and God knows that. What a believer should do, is try to keep correcting his mistakes (repenting) and abandoning sins. Islam recognizes that we are human beings and that we cannot be as pure as angels. Mistakes happen and the only thing is that we shouldn't insist on repeating them but try to keep improving ourselves by following God's commandments.

Hope this makes things clear.

Peace/salaam.

I am a muslim reverted from christianity. If you have lost faith in Christianity due to your sins it is wrong on your part. We muslims have a more deeper problem with Christianity. The problem is in their believing in three persons of God basically and belief in saints. If your frustration with Christianity is on these grounds then according to me you are right and should do something about it. What I can suggest is you read a english translation of the Holy Quran which is available on the internet and you will find through google search. Once you read it, and if you are destined to revert to Islam Allah (swt) will bless you with understanding and peace. After this wait for few months and see if you continue to find Islam as a true faith and if only you find it so then consult some good muslim friends and revert back to Islam without delay. If you are in Mumbai the best way to do this is contact Jumma Masjid near Crawford market where there are staff who will help you. Continue seeking and Insha Allah, you will find the right path.As far as forgiveness of past sins are concerned its true tha Allah will forgive all your past sins and also overlook your future small sins if you pray regularly, do charity and try to be pious.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Hello. Yes, it is true, that if you convert to Islam and truly believe, then all your sins are forgiven. Your slate is wiped clean and it is as if you were reborn that day. Actually, many Muslims will ask a new Muslim to pray for them because they are in such a state of purity. You bring into Islam with you all the good deeds that you did before you were Muslim, so you are truly in a state of wonderful grace when you newly submit to Islam.

May Allah guide you to the best in this world and the next. Ameen.

Fi Aman Allah,

Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid
