The Confederates won the 1st battle at Bull Run...but they celebrated instead of pursuing the Union Army into Washington D.C. and possibly capturing Lincoln. The Union was able to drive a wedge through (Shenandoah Valley) into the Carolinas and separating the Confederacy from the east to the Mississippi River, and by naval blockade of the South.

The Union won because of:

a) better leadership at the top. Lincoln was a much better uniter of his country's resources and he had a stronger MORAL position. He outsmarted Davis time and again.

b) better generals in the final years. Early on, the south had a better army and much better officers, but U.S. Grant changed all that. He understood that blockade was a vital factor as well.

c) technology and industry. The North was industrial, the south was agrarian.

d) desertion by Europe. Without European intervention, the South was doomed, and by emancipating the slaves, Lincoln pretty much won over European sympathies.
