The information is on American Airlines' website.

"You may be required to present proof of age (such as a birth certificate) at the airport for any children under the age of 18 who are traveling with you." Presumably, this also applies to unaccompanied minors.

I remember flying to Florida a few months after 911 on Continental. I was 15 at the time and didn't have driver's license or state ID. TSA let me use my school ID as it had a picture on it and my name and age (sorta -it showed my class graduating year). I think they take birth certificates too so long as the parent is with you.
