you could just wipe down the outside, or if your energetic disassemble the entire thing. make sure the gun is unloaded leave the action open, remove the cap at the end of the magazine/tube, then just slide the barrel off. close the action reach up inside (where you insert the shells) push the button on the left and gently pull on the slide, the slide and bolt will come right out. then get a brass punch and knock the 2 pins out of the reciever and the whole trigger assembly will come right out. they are very easy guns to clean-if you dont believe me look it up in the owners manual-that too will give you a step by step guide for disassembly. to re-assmeble just do the steps in reverse, also one other tip i would use 3in1 oil or an actuall gun oil

I would make sure you have the manufactures instructions for cleaning and maintenance. You can get the manual on Line from Remington. Anything past that point may cause a problem unless you are a decent gunsmith or armorer.
The cleaning and maintenance procedure is not difficult but I would follow the manufactures suggested procedure. Anyone can start to tell you how to do it but many, including myself, may forget to tell you that one little item that can cause a problem.

The 870 is the most visitable and easy to clean shotgun ever made in my opinion (I own one and have used it for over 15 years)
Unscrew the barrel cap and remove it (it will need swabbing with cleaner and oil) look through it when its clean and shiny it's done
there are 2 pins that push out on the metal part above the trigger (push them out)
the trigger assembly will come out easy now, Bush it with a tooth brush using cleaner, then oil sparingly at the moving parts
The pump action can be removed by pressing the stems down (you will have to reach into the area where you removed the trigger action) and pulling the pump part forward and it should also be brushed with cleaner and then oiled slightly
Reassemble and wallah your done
After each season remove the plug cap by pulling it out with a screw driver (be careful it is spring loaded) remove the plug and spring and wipe them down with cleaner then oil)
reassemble in reverse
I love my 870 it's the best shot gun ever produced in my opinion!

I wouldn't waste my time disassembling an 870 every time it was shot.
Once a year is more than enough for that.
Pump the gun open, wipe off the metal on the magazine tube and underside of the barrel, pump the gun closed and wipe the magazine tube, and the entire barrel, wipe the receiver, snap the trigger, and put it away.
