Christianity is not a book religion, the books of the Bible were selected to be read during Liturgy. One of the reasons the west had the reformation was the fact no one could understand the Liturgy- as it was in Latin. For the parishioners it was go through the motions invent your own doctrine and hide what you realy believe so you don't get burnt at the stake.
while in the Orthodox Church where the liturgy has been in some old from of an the local language there has been no reformation people could understand it.

The Bible, as we know it ,WAS NOT put together in those . days. It was written on scrolls and read to the congregation in the synagogs. It took 1500 years for all the scrolls to be written. They had to hidden in caves .when they were attacked., in order to protect them, There were people then, just like now, that wants to destroy Christianity. They couldn't do it then and they can't now . Sorry folks. we're here to stay. Many centuries past before all of them were found. Then they were complied into the Bible. There's different translations but the same theme in all. Some words changed , BUT, not the meaning. The Gentiles ( non Jew ) started the church as we know it. The Jews had their Synagogs.and didn't worship Jesus, only God. the Father. They didn't think Jesus , the son, had come yet.

It was not read during that time because the standard Roman religion had a monopoly on commercial Christianity by keeping the book out of the hands of the common people.
Ironic it is that people today don't appreciate having the book in their own language. This, after people like William Tyndale were burned at the stake for translating it.

Christianity is not only a "book religion" but a relationship of experience as well.
Theory can only bring us so far but experience carries us most of the way.And it flourished under God's grace, that was how illiterate people came to know Christ;experience and spreading of the Gospel.
God bless ya.

It flourished in much the same way that it does now. Since few modern-day Christians have ever read the entire bible--let alone even know the names of every book--they go on hearsay, promises of a better life, (both now and later) and tradition.

That's part of the reason there were monks, Cardinals, Bishops, priests, and other church officiants. They were very often learned men who were literate, and were able to teach the word of God by mouth to those who couldn't read. That's also why there are very often old Bible texts that are very ornate and artfully illustrated. To supplement the officiants outside of mass, the pictures helped to tell the stories and make them accessible in some form to every class.

Because of martydom. When you see people dying for what they believe in, you tend to really think about if their beliefs are true or not. Christianity is not just a book religion...the Book you refer to is authored by over 40 different people over thousands of years and there is not a single contradiction or mistake. Go check it out for yourself. Read something by Josh McDowell...he was an atheist who was challenged to prove the Bible wrong, which he failed to do so. Than you can probably answer your question even better.

Word of mouth and churches.
I don't believe the gospel was spread much during the dark ages or the entire time the Roman Cath. church guarded the bible and only wanted Mass done in latin.

Until the reformation, the Bible was held by the church. People believed what they were told to believe.
Sounds familiar, huh?
