Chipolata originates in Italy but is also a French dish which includes small thin spicy sausages.In the UK chipolatas are very easily found in any recognized supermarket. Traditionally at Christmas you wrap the chipolata with streaky bacon and hey presto you've made a "Pig in blanket" and very tasty too!

It was first recorded in English in 1877 and comes from the Italian "cipolata" through French. It means a small, spicy sausage. The word has been taken over in Britain to describe sausages that are anything but spicy.

It's Italian and strictly speaking it is not used for the British sausage in general. It is often used for small sausages which accompany the traditional Christmas turkey.
