it seems to me that the circumstances surrounding dale sr.'s death are a bit off, is it just me or what? i mean, the crash was something that most drivers would have walked away from, but dale didn't. and the safety equipment is checked regularly, as per nascar regs. so it all sounds pretty fishy to me, kind of like the magic bullet theory that killed kennedy. i don't know how old most of the people on here are, but i still remember when racing was dangerous and sex was safe, and now it's just the opposite. so what is your theory, thoughts, or just rants about it.

Let it go man. Let the man be. But if you must know... The common thought is that during the red flag for Tony not to long before the accident, Dale loosened his belts as do all the drivers and just didn't pull them tight again or just not tight enough. Also there was rumor that the seat belt broke. A Medic/Rescue worker said he cut the belt to extract Dale from the car. I have a picture of the cockpit of the car from the NASCAR investigation. In the picture it is obvious that he did hit the steering wheel with a lot of force and that is what took his life. The man is dead and so is this subject now move on.

Actually quite a few drivers including Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty died in similar accidents. Contributing factors included Dale Sr. adjusting the seat and wearing an open face helmet. Also these drivers were not wearing the HANS device at the time as it wasn't required and there were no Safer barriers on the walls of the tracks.

Dale refused to wear a Hans device to protect his head from this impact. Also he was trying to protect the 2 DEI cars when Marlin and Rusty Wallace were faster, but he tried to block them. Had he backed off and realized he had a 6th place car instead of a 3rd place car, or if he were wearing a Hans device, he'd have walked away from the crash. I think he knew the risks and chose to take them rather than minimize them.

No, you are wrong about being able to walk away from that type of wreck. The sudden stop wrecks are the ones that do the most damage to the driver. If the car tumbles and turns then it is dissipating energy instead of the driver taking it all like in the one he was in. Now I do believe that there might have been a safety failure and NASCAR would like to keep the degree of negligence classified. And Teresa wanting to keep photos of him out of the media, might have been the last sensible decision she made.

I was once told by a retired camera man that there was a camera that showed Sr. slumped over the wheel before he hit the wall. Combine that with the fact that Richard Childress now requires all of its drivers to have a heart exam monthly and you have a potential that at least the feeling is present in the Childress camp that Big E had a massive coronary as he was rounding 3 in 3rd behind his 2 cars, one being driven by his son. His 50 year old heart just stressed out.

My theory is that he crashed, hit the wall at high speed, did not have enough safety devices to support his head, died from the trauma like too many before him did.

No conspiracy, just a tragic accident (which he caused by the way when trying to block others so that Michael Waltrip and Jr could battle it out for the win).

OK, The guy hit a wall traveling well over 100 MPH. Safety standards in NASCAR have changed since then to give the friver more protection. The crash was witnessed by millions on TV.

NOthing funny to my way of thinking.

Come let it go..nothing we can do about it now...He died from the force that he hit the steering wheel with, he did not have a helmet with the face shield, no hans device back then.. This was a very bad crash I was there..Racing today has been made a lot more safer due to this very unfortunate accident that took Dale Sr from us... R.I.P great one..

To put it as simple as possible, he died due to the accident and the reason he died was from base skull fracture due to the whipping of the head as a result of the cars sudden stop and his head continued forward. Yes, a full helmet and the HANS device probably would of saved his life. Unfortunately, we will never know. The man is truly missed and he will be remembered forever. I know that I will never forget him. It is time to let it go and just remember him at the track and during racing. If Jr. can continue on with his life of racing, knowing that at anytime his life will pass in the same manner, we can continue to watch racing and enjoy every moment that it has to share with us. NASCAR, it's a way of life!!!
