I just found my w-2's from 2005, and I still have all of them. I don't owe any taxes, but I would be entitled to a return. Is there any way that I can check back to see if I did infact forget to file them in 2005, or any other year? Maybe on the IRS website? And if I can't find that out, would I probably be fined for trying to file them twice?

There is no $30 fee on the IRS website to check your filing satus. There are a couple of things that you can do. The easiest would be to simply call the IRS and ask. Or you could call and ask for a transcript of your 2005 return. That's free and they'll either tell you that they have no record of a return being filed or they'll send you a letter to that effect within 10 days or so or they'll send you the transcript of what you filed.

If you're not sure, do NOT just file a return! That will set off a bunch of alarm bells at the IRS. If you filed electronically you may well have all copies of your W-2s since they don't necessarily need to be sent in for an e-filed return.

If you didn't file and don't owe, there are no penalties for late filing. However you only have 3 years from the filing deadline to claim any refunds due you. You still have plenty of time on that, but it would be a good idea to get it filed while it's fresh in your mind. If you miss the 3 year deadline, any refund is lost forever.

You can request a copy of your 2005 taxes. If they have them on file they will send them to you. Otherwise you may get a letter stating they do not have any tax record on file for you for that year. That would be the easiest way. To go about this, you can find all the information you need on the IRS website. There is also a phone number that you can call, which is what I recommend in this case so that you don't have to wait very long for an answer. Otherwise if you want to just file the request, you can find the form on the IRS website, then wait for your reply. If you call, make sure you call at a time when you have time to wait on hold, this will increase your possibility of getting an answer before the end of your conversation.

Hi You can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to speak to a person. They representative will be able to inform you - they will ask you some personal questions first to verify it is you that is calling..like dob address etc. then can check your records. If you have filed.. you may ask for a record of your account ..that is a free request. It will give you the basic information on your return..wages...total tax..w/h ..refund amount . If you did not file...they rep will help you on getting them filed..what you need etc. If you ever did file a second return.. dont worry you wont be fined. They can tell if its duplicate or not. Call and you will be surprised how pleasant they are to help.

You can't find out on a website, but you can call the IRS and ask them - once you satisfactorily establish that you are who you say you are, they can probably tell you.

Or you could request a transcript of your 2005 return - see http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=151682,00.html - a transcript is free, and that will let you know if they have it or not.

You can still get your refund from 2005 if you didn't file but file now.

Call IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and explain your situation they will be able to check to see if you have file. If you haven't filed they will give you a deadline date to file your return.
If you haven't filed and you file your 2007 return, and you have a refund coming you won't get it until all your returns are filed. It is a new program IRS has it is call "Refund Hold".
