Many people are hurt physically and emotionally, some are even killed physically. So I'm wondering if some can be killed by words.

Of course. Harmful things can be said which can cause a variety of physiological changes leading to something fatal eg: MI or stroke. It can also induce detrimental changes that could lead to fatal accidents eg: migraine whilst driving.

Some of the previous answers talk about letting the meaning get to them. It's true, but also a moot point ... they're telling me they've never felt sick because of an emotion?

Sticks and stones can break my bones
But words can never hurt me...

not unless you let them, that is

A word is not a tangible item. So a literal word cannot kill anything. For example, some have said "If the words are 'shoot him', then yes, words can kill". That is not accurate. It was the bullet that killed the person, not directly the word. Words cannot directly kill people. They can cause heart attacks, but they cannot directly kill.

Words are the powerful weapon we have. Our tongue is the strongest muscle in the whole entire body. One moment we are praising someone and then the next we can lower them. Just saying something mean can make a person break down emotionally and can lead to a physical break down

Well the girl who hung herself as a result of the Myspace prank certainly was. The hateful things said to her first killed her spirit, at which point she took her life.

EDIT: For Tardis Girl below me...If words alone are never harmful, then why is it that the pen is often mightier than the sword?

Words can kill the spirit. It is like stabbing someone in the heart when you bear false witness against someone and ruin their reputation. Words have power to lift up or destroy. Be careful what you say.

Only if you let words kill you. Don't be offended and words never killed anyone. Guns, knives, swords, bombs and blunt instruments maybe, but not words. People let words offend them, but the words can't touch them if they don't allow them to touch them. We invite our problems quite frequently. We choose either to act on words or not to act on them.

Sticks and stones may break my bones,
but words will never hurt me.

Sure - words can cause stress which lead to a fatal condition - heart attack, etc. Then there's always dropping a dictionary from a high building... but I digress.

There is also killing a person with words spoken at high volume, which would cause internal injuries.

Only in certain circumstances. Yelling "stampede" in a large crowd can cause injuries, if it results in action.

Words alone are never harmful. Speak on!

Yes of course, like those big huge words on the side of some commercial buildings, if one of them fell on you you'd probably be heading straight for St Peter! lol
