Nothing really can be substituted for cardamom. The closest spice would be whole aniseed or star anise (make sure to ground into small pieces) or whole cumin.

I think I'd just leave it out. It's a common spice when baking w/ apricots. If it seems suitable, you may try ¼ tsp. cinnamon, but it may not work in all recipes calling for cardamom.

the only thing close is cinnamon. Cardamon has a very unique smokey taste.
