mason = bricklayer
freemason = member of the freemason fraternity; the fraternity descended from the ancient masonic guilds that built the great wonders and cathedrals around the world. Free has two meanings - 1) never a slave 2) speculative, i.e. 'free' from being an operative mason
to some other responses:
* freemasonry is NOT a religion; it does not offer salvation, and requires that its members have a religion
* there is no worship in the freemason Lodge, it is a fraternity, religion and politics are not discussed in Lodge...

Sometimes they're the same- I'm a Freemason, but we're also called masons, just because it's simpler. To get more complicated, we call the stone and brick workers "Operative Masons", and we're called "Speculative Masons".

There are so many already correct answers here. I am only writing to show you the link between the two...
Masons were trade men who worked with brick and mortar. They had the training in steps that we still use today - that is to say: Apprentice, Journeyman, Master Craftsman. These three steps are used in most trade skills today. Obviously, belonging to the Masons ment that you were a Mason by trade, and that you were working to become a Master Craftsmen (Master Mason).
A time in history came when other people wanted to join the Masons even though they were not Masons by trade, (some were doctors, lawyers, musicians, etc.) Since these people were not bricklayers, there had to be some way to denote the difference. So then, they were called "Free-Masons" which could be defined as: *Being a Mason free from the bricks and mortar work*

A mason is a bricklayer.
A freemason is a member of the world's most unsecret, secret men's club.
It's my understanding the freemasons were formed in part so men could discuss religion/business apart from the theological powers that be who tended to burn at the stake anyone who chose to favor free speech and free thought.
