The first step to salvation is hearing the word of God, because the word tells you about salvation and why you need to be save. The Bible says that Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10:17(KJV). Read Romans 10:10-11, Ephesians 2:8.

The first step toward salvation is letting go. You have to learn to leave the decisions up to God. Have total trust and faith and comfort (if you will), in leaving the decisions in your life up to God All Mighty.
You'd be suprised how many people have a difficult time LEARNing how to let go...

God puts it on our hearts...to admit our guilt, that we are sinners deserving of hell. We can ignore Him, or believe Him and repent.

Take Care and God Bless.

P.S. I think we all are convicted in our hearts when we do wrong, and know we should probably be doing something other than the sins that we choose to practice, then we tend to call upon God, and look to the Bible, and/or go to church to try and gain some bearing on our level of guilt and condemnation...faith comes by hearing the word. Salvation comes by faith. Only by studying God's word will we understand that God has given us a gift, a wonderful unmerited pardon from the penalty of our sins in Jesus Christ!

Step 2: Know that because of sin we DESERVE hell
Step 3: Christ loves us so much that he paid the price for our sin, by dying on the cross. He was buried, and conquered sin by rising the 3rd day
Step 4: Believe in your heart, have full faith, and complete trust in God's free gift of salvation to take you to heaven

Calling on the name of the Lord, That if thou shalt call upon the name of the lord thou shalt be saved. You must call on Jesus, accept Him into your heart as your own personal Savior, repent of all sin and believe that if you do this he will come into your heart and will sup with you and you with Him, when you call on Him like this, an angel writes your name in the book of life, thus saving you from hell, salvation.
