If time, in a 'general' sense, is a way in which we measure series of events, then when you boil everything down, don't you end up with nothing more than methods of passing time?
You may tell yourself you're doing more than just this...
"i'm going to medical school, i'm becoming an artist, i'm learning to be an actor, i'm enjoying fine cuisine, i'm reading, i'm writing, i'm eating, i'm sleeping, i'm going to church."
...but in the end, isn't all of this just to pass time and be satisfied with the time you passed? And, if not satisfied then at least pacified?
Now, sure, there will always seem to be more than what i'm saying... for we like to dress things up and imagine that we're accomplishing something, as if we could ever do more than pass time; and the craving for generality and more consuming explanations will plague mankind for a long while.
So, i ask you, when is it ever more than passing time? other than when it just 'feels' like more?

You feel confused now, but by your last 2 questions it is apparent you are standing on the brink of a major shift in understanding. Once this shift happens it will make sense, till the next cliff. Keep pondering as you are now, wow, you are further along than you think.
Blessings!

Incredible! You hit the nail right on the head. But don't we want more out of life? Perhaps doing something for someone else with no particular reason or gain? Just because you wanted to? Is that also passing the time? No more? Are we that bored with life? HELP me find a reason to live. I rather just DIE if there were nothing else to do than merely to pass the time. Aren't we supposed to be discovering who we are?
Obviously I asked more questions than answered yours. In the final analysis would ANY of this matter when our life is extinguished forever when our planet is destroyed? Perhaps those are the questions that our ancestors from a distant corner of the galaxy asked before their sun was extinguished in a super nova explosion billions of years ago. MY THEORY of course.
Thanks for a soul searching question. What IS the meaning of LIFE?

Ever seen a bunch of kids playing on the beach, making sand castles?
They take hours to make them, painstakingly and when the sun is down, they destroy it and go back home, and the tide washes it all away, to make space for the 'them' to come back the next day to play and create yet again, so it's not about creating, rather about having fun while doing it! As a soul, joy is the only thing we all come here for, the rest can rightly be called a timepass.
This breath will be exhaled any how; it is what you do with this incoming breath, makes life. As on that depends whether you will release it as exhilaration or a sigh.
No wonder, the Vedic word for Creation, is 'leela' or simply, Gods play! Play is the thing to remember, to dance on your way to the Ocean, the rest is just for memory sake, and memories are one day forgotten.

Yup...I get up in the morning, have something to eat and a cup of tea, then feed the cats.......and in between being a physical being, a spirit in a body, I participate in creating the world, not only on the mundane or illusive, but by having chosen to come into this incarnation to give an example to evolving souls that there IS more to being on earth than being on earth...that there are simultaneous realms existing with us. I have access to (some of) these realms and I bring that invisibility into the earth plane, which in turn provides a connection point, for other souls in bodies, to their original nature. This "meaningful" employment of my personal "time," makes being here extremely worthwhile and fulfills even me! Thank you for asking such an insightful question.

When we are making real progress (however defined), we are doing more than passing time. For example, until I read your details, I figured you meant specifically here on Yahoo! Answers. What we have here is far more than a waste of time. We have a unique opportunity to communicate with the entire English-speaking world! OK, some of us take better advantage of this opportunity than others, but I think this experience is life-enhancing for many of us. I have credited Y!A with saving my life, actually. But even if it's not that profound, we have gotten to know people in very different circumstances and locations from ourselves, and been able to share our experiences to our mutual benefit.

Another astute question. We are here to experience "full aliveness" in every now moment. The old eternal life (aliveness) quest of the Holy Grail. That experience that holds our lifeblood.
BUT, other than 'filling' time, our defensive ego identity has no purpose but to avoid the future repeating past pain which means we are never awake and alive in the present moment.
There is no journey but seeking self-knowledge - enlightenment - and overcoming our conditioned identity for the sake of returning to authentic being and bliss. AND bliss has nothing to do with emotions and feelings. It is a flow state of causality between enlightened choice and the physical manifestation of these choices. Eternal aliveness is not possible in the ego's delusional experience of reality. It is the synchronizing of reality with one's true nature and purpose. Remembering what we love is the way back to that state of bliss which allows us to give all that we have away to the world.

Consider that a clock only measures time like a tape measure, measures a distance. The distance is always there, whether measured or not. Time is always here, it is how we understand it when we are at rest and the peace we find that helps us move and act to enjoy and develope this time.

To live in this moment only,
there is no time,
there is no doubt of love - fear,
there is only swooning in the infinite divine.
To live thus, is neither doing, passing, measuring, going, striving, hoping, endless trying, racking through the mind, searching, seeking, enquiring.
To live in the now moment only, bringing only the energy of this moment, is being.
Bright blessings be

You are right. It is all just about filling the seconds we are here. To some that sounds morbid. To me it is a realization that there isn't a lot of time left. So I'm going to spend it living every second.

Greetings Friend,
It becomes more than passing time when one enters into the present moment, then time ceases. When we live in the now, there is no future and no past.
sending love,
