I have a part time job and recently I started pursuing a second job to make ends meet. I was told by my first job that I have to fill out an Application for Outside Employment, that is, I have to ask them permission to have another job. I've never seen or heard of anything like that and I was kind of steamed because they don't pay me very much, they don't give me benefits, and the scheduling sucks. Has anyone else ever run up against this? Is it common?

Never, it should be none of their business.

I have never heard of this before. They have no right to tell you can or can't hold another job as long as it don't interfere with your current job or schedule. Be prepared, they may start finding reasons not to give you hours or worse yet, fire you.

As far as filling this form out, I would put it off as long as you can. Or just look at it and see what it is asking for. Maybe they are just looking for what hours you can or can't work? Or possibly why you are looking for an outside job.

They want a chance to determine if the second job presents a conflict of interest with your current job. It is actually EXTREMELY common. In most cases, if you tell the HR department what type of second job you are looking at, they can tell you immediately what the chances of approval are.

Cate: You could not have given WORSE advise if you were paid to. They have EVERY right to tell you you can't work for a competitor, supplier, or customer while you work for them. Following your advise is a good way to lose BOTH jobs FOR CAUSE. (For cause means NO unemployment pay.)

there are some jobs that may be a conflict of interest if you were to work there and some companies tell you that when you are hired. for instance, if you are a volunteer or work for peta, you can't work for the circus. because the idiots at peta think that the circus is cruel to animals. but it is actually just the opposite.

This is ridiculous! Girl there is a good parttime income I just got involved in which is easy to do and does not require hours. You do it on your own time and in just 3 to 4 months you can get out of that hell hole you are in right now. I did just that, fired my company and I have been better off since.
