The bible is supposed to document King Saul's depression. He used to get David in to play music to him to cheer him up. It must have worked a bit as he named David as his sucesssor King.
Also Job in the bible was a miserable Sod.

Good question! I guess it was invented in the 70's or 80's when the drug companies needed to make an illness to sell their pills.
Before then it was known as melancholia and was just regarded as someones temperament. Like someone else said in the old days people were too busy to feel depressed and we had a greater sense of community, which often revolved round the church. Pills in the 50's and 60's were usually tranquilisers, not antidepressants which many found hard to withdraw from.
Since new labour came to power depression diagnosis has sky rocketed.
Edit: I found this article:The first antidepressant, iproniazid, was originally developed as a treatment for tuberculosis. It was widely prescribed in the late 1950s to treat depression. Iproniazid belonged to a class of medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This type of drug revolutionized the treatment of depression, but patients had to follow a strict diet to avoid dangerous side effects.

I think the way to find the answer to this to find who created the verbiage, the phrase, depression, say for example, what doctor is famous for it and then go from there. Kind of like polio or AIDS or bipolar it had to have been created by some med person who loved to create a new name. Perhaps that's not helpful, but it's a different way to research it.

I dont think people get depressed. I think people are just unhappy with the way their life is going at that point in time. But you can change the way you feel. So i dont know when the first case of depression was.

Oh, rats, I wanted to say Adam and Eve. Adam must have been depressed with Eve's behavior and pushy attitude.

Are you serious? This, is a question your teacher gave you? How should we know when it was, the first one recorded probably not to long ago but humans have been around for thousands of years it would be hard for us to know.
