How would you expect people to get from where they are to where they want or need to be? What do you want to do, shut down the entire economy?
Any form of transportation has risks! If you walk you can trip, fall, hit your head and die! Should we all stay hidden in a house, wrapped in bubble wrap?
We tolerate all sorts of things, including questions like this that really do not make sense!!

Because our economy would collapse without the highway system, we would all plunge into poverty and people would start dying of starvation.

I have been in quite a few wrecks on the roads, and its not that bad most of the time.
if faced with staying home and loosing my job, or risking my life on the roads, and being able to pay rent and get food, I will go out most of the time.
the USA has built its economy on moving people and things around continually, we can't just stop.
I blame tax breaks for buying a home: it has driven the price so high that you can't just move because work is available in another city, you have to drive there every day.
its sad, but it is up to the government to fix it because they caused it.
