Right now, I'm in Kuwait. I send cards back to my two boys all the time. As long as it's a standard letter, all I have to do is put "FREE MAIL" where the stamp is supposed to go. Our post office on base (really it's more of a shack!!) puts the postal code stamp on it, and away it goes. My boys have received everything in 5 or 6 days, and nothing has been lost yet.

An arm and a leg? Are you kidding? Get the flat rate boxes- $8.95 regardless of weight. Letters are considered to be domestic- $.41 just like everything else. Where is your FRG to let you know these things? And he will have to pay just the same as if he was here. I wouldn't send them- if they are not used in a certain amount of time the stamps can come off. He can buy stamps and envelopes on base. Let him use that room to pack things he really needs.

For him to mail regular letters to you, there is no charge. All he has to do is write "FREE" where the stamp normally goes and it goes from there.
For you to send letters to him, it is the regular rate. With packages your best bet is to get the Flat Rate USPS Boxes and you can put as much stuff in as you want, no matter what the weight it is $8.95. You will need to fill out a customs form though for each box.

If he has an APO address, it costs regular U.S. postage to mail letters and packages. Also, you can check with mobility if you have to send him a package, a lot of times they can just carry it with them on a plane going to wherever he is and they don't charge you anything, you just have to let your husband know it's coming so he can pick it up when the plane arrives.
