I can't drive.A while back I had a Dr. appt that my hubby couldn't take me to so I asked my mom.She doesn't have a car so we used my hubbys. It was raining really hard and she was nervous so I told her 2 or 3 times go back I'll reschedual, but she said she was ok. So we come to a low water crossing. She said we'd be ok,but the car stalled in the water. She then tried several times to start it under water.Shes always been around cars so she should know better, but anyway it blew my engine. There was no way we could fix it.I had $1000 in the bank to pay for my husbands R.E. license.I had to buy a new car with the money, which left me with no way to pay for his school.I feel if my kid were in this situation I would help out even if it wasn't my fault, but my mom gave me $250 and said that was more than enough. She feels that she was doing me a favor and its not her fault. My husband feels she is the liscenced driver so shes responsible.I really don't know.Who do you think is right and why? Thanks

That is tough. Your mom is at fault. The reason being is, she should know better. Yes she was doing you a favor. A favor you needed her to do because she is the one licensed to do it. If she is not capable of knowing when it is not safe to operate a vehicle then she should have her licensed revoked.

On one hand, you asked your mother to do you a favor. On the other hand, your mother persisted in doing something dangerous even when told not to. You cannot blow the engine on a car that way, unless it was in ill repair at the time. She did help you out to the tune of $250.
There's alot of lessons in this but in answer to your question, there is enough blame to go around however that certainly isn't going to help your problem. I don't think your mom feels responsible or like she needs to do more, so I would suggest you write it off as a bad experience and try to get a loan.

It is not your fault, because yeah sure you asked for the favor, but you told your mother to go back and she wouldn't listen. She is entitled to pay you the $1000 back wheater you do a little each month or the whole thing. She already gave you $250 sure that's enough to cover the first month. If she refuses, go to small claims court and sue for $750(it's what's left of what she owes you). She is the liscenend driver as your hubbie said, so she will be at fault if you go to court.
Good luck!

I think your both at fault. You let her take your hubby's car. Be happy that she offered you the money. If you can't drive, she was doing what she could to help you. Is it worth all the drama just because of a car? Move on... with it. S h i t happens!

The car was not your mothers. So she did not have the right to drive it the way she wanted too. You ask her to go back home, but she did not. If you went over to your mothers home and touch something she asked you not to. But you touch it and it broke, would your mother want you to pay for it??? Did you call your auto insurance to see if the car was covered. Also call your mothers auto insurance.

It was good of your mom to cough up the money she did. She was doing you a favour. Just take your lumps.
