I am looking to buy a cheap used car in the South London area (England).
I am looking for private adverts on the internet, such as the ones on www.gumtree.com
Does anyone know of any good websites listing used cars? (not car dealers)
I have spent many hours looking on ebay but the cars there are either very far away to test drive, or are on an auction- when I am looking to buy now.

ebay is no good...read above!
craiglist is useless. they only have 5 cars for sale in the whole country!

You should try Auction Alfie http://www.auctionalfie.co.uk as you can search all the best auction and classified websites - and you won't need to keep typing in your search each time as it remembers for you.
