i am a muslim and I realy hate to explain to people why Islam is a peaceful religion because i know that what some muslims did to you guys in the name of Islam was awful and you kind of have the right to be pissed, but i want u to know that the quran is not the one responsible. People always quote verses from the Quran claiming they are violent for example: 2:191 And slay them wherever ye catch.. them..Such is the reward of disbeleivers.even as a muslim i fell into the trap of thinking that is violent and this is a common verse people use to prove that but the midsection of the verse is missing. lets look at the whole verse to c if it makes a diffrence. 2:191 And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of the unbeleivers.

I fail to see how this is any better than the version with the midsection missing. The only modification is that it says "don't fight in Mosques unless they're 'askin for it!".

No, violent conflict predates the invention of Islam.

Take a look at some of the hominid skulls and what killed the ancient members of our species. Humans are violent. Religion is just one way to justify violence against other human beings.

I still think the quote you provided is morally unjustifiable in today's world. "slay them" is the reward of the unbelievers?

Can't you just reason and create a modern set of ethics, instead of sticking to a book that approves of violence? Why defer to the past, when the future can be so much better for every human being?

Edit: Sure, it may mean defense in the face of an attack, but look at what some Muslims consider an attack: They bomb nightclubs, threaten death to women who name teddy bears, all because they believe the non-Muslims are blaspheming and "attacking" Islam, when in reality they are simply not members of that belief.

No religion (expect for Buddhism, possibly) can claim that they do not allow war, so what if islam is one of them, right?
Besides war predates islam and the quran, so islam couldn't have introduced warfare to humanity. War is human. No other species (expect ants, maybe) goes around spreading destruction, religion has almost nothing to do with it.
