Actually there are two instances in which you can adjust your status.

One of them is mentioned above, adjusting your non-immigrant status to that of permanent resident by filing Form I-485.

The second instance is adjusting your non-immigrant status to that of another non-immigrant status, for example from a B2 to an F1, or L1 to H1 etc. This is done by filing Form I-539 once you meet the requirements to adjust that 'other' status.

Adjustment of Status is when you are already in US with non-immigrant visa and applying for green card, changing status to immigrant visa. The form I-485 which you use to apply for green card is called Register to Permanent Residency (this is when you are outside of US) or Adjustment of Status (when you are inside).
