If you go to an animal shelter and get a cat from there, you'll end up with a great pet. What you want to look for is a healthy looking animal, friendly, not too fat or too skinny, good looking teeth. Pay attention to if they want attention from you. If they act scared, they might not be the best animal. I raised my cats since birth (mama cat had just become pregnant when we got her) Cats have a natural instinct to use a litter box. If you get a kitten, just place it in the box every now and then so it will get the idea. Cats are smart, you'd be surprised.

It sounds like your mom just doesn't want a cat. To say that they will not use the litter box is either an excuse, experience with problem cats/bad owners or simply not knowing about cats from maybe not having one.
A cat that does not use the litter box is usually sick, doesn't like the litter you're using, doesn't like the location of the box (too noisy or near its food), too many cats using the same box or you're not keeping it clean enough. Other than that, cats will usually go right for the box once they've been shown. Usually the mom does this, but if it's a kitten who's been taken away too early, it's up to you.
Anyway, if your mother changes her mind, go to a shelter. They will have lots of cats of all types in need of homes. You can go to the Humane Society, ASPCA, a locally run shelter or some stores like PetCo have no-kill shelters within their stores. Other than that, do not go to a pet store. The cats they sell have unknown backgrounds usually - meaning in-bred, sick...
An adult cat will be more likely to be litter trained and not as apt to get into things as a kitten will. You will want to pick out a cat that is right for your lifestyle. If you say you're going to take care of it, how much are you home? Afterschool activities? If you get a cat that needs lots of attention and playtime, you should make sure you're not home only to eat and sleep. You can do some research online for breed types. Also, Russian Blues are beautiful, but make sure it is a Russian if you don't go to a shelter and decide to pay for it. Russians aren't cheap. It's been my experience that anyone with a gray cat thinks they have a Russian and not just a short-haired gray domestic. Russians have a distinctly different structure.
Cost varies from shelter. And some shelters require spaying or neutering before they'll turn it over to you or they do it and work it into the cost.

Here's a tip, don't buy from a pet shop. The kittens there are often sickly. As for litter training, my first cat made a few mistakes and then was fine. My second cat automatically went to the litter tray, I have no idea why. I suppose they're just naturally fastidious animals. They're a lot easier to house train than dogs. Cats are very easy to look after. As they grow out of kitten hood they just sleep all day (but you can still cuddle them!)
As long as your future cat will NOT end up in an animal shelter, I say go for it. And if you're looking into breeds, get a Burmese ;) Their fur is really soft.

Like everyone else has said the liter box shouldn't be a prob. As for the bengal cat, I would say NO. They are great cats don't get me wrong, just not for beginners at all. They are a med-lg cat. That needs alot of attention all the time even when you are at school. It will be driving your mom crazy or just being a cat and getting a lil to nosey and breakin something for your mom to get mad about. Try an animal shelter kitty, they all need good homes and if the ones in shelters don't get homes they KILL them. No kitty deserves that. Adopt if you can prove to your mom that you will take full resp. and step up and be a good pet owner. Good Luck with the mom thing.

I'd go to an Animal Shelter. There are alot of animals that could use homes. You'll feel good knowing you are rescuing a cat in need of a loving owner. Also, Cats from the shelter will most likely be litter box trained.

Cats take to litter boxes very quickly...just be sure you keep it clean. We have had cats for 23 years and have never had one not use its litter box.
Any kind of cat is a good starter, although different breeds have different personalities.
Try to get one from an animal shelter -- or many pet stores (like Pet Smart or Petco) have animal rescue groups bring animals in for adoption on weekends. We've gotten all our cats over the years (7 total) from pet adoptions at pet stores.
These cats are usually already fixed and have had their shots and vet checkup so you don't have to worry about them as much.

I have FOUR cats and live in an apartment. I have rarely, if ever had a problem with ANY of them going potty outside of their litter boxes. HOWEVER, they are pretty rough on my carpet and it will definitely have to be replaced when I move out. So there are things you have to consider before you get a cat. Maybe you should just listen to your mom and wait until you're old enough to get one on your own.

I have a cat already. I found him outside one day so we took him to the vet to make sure he wasn't sick so now he lives with us. We didn't have any problem getting our cat to use the litter box. Somehow he knew what to do. I really don't know how much they cost, but it shouldn't be to much. If you want one REALLY REALLY BADLY you can always go to a rescue shelter and adopt one. Well, that is pretty much all I can tell you.

Ummm... when I was young (not that long ago just so you know ;P) I had imaginary pets. Have an imaginary cat for two weeks. Tell your mum when you clean out its litter/when you feed it/when you pet it/when you give the vet $100 etc. At the end of two weeks one of three things will happen.. 1. your mum decides that you're crazy and has you locked away. 2. You've driven your mum mad and she wants a cat now or 3. she realises that you've been consistent for two weeks and allows you to get a cat.
