Sleep apnoea happens when the trachea collapses during sleep, blocking off the airway to the lungs. Smokers suffer from it mostly. It's treated with a continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) machine where the user wears a mask all night with air being forced into the airways, keeping the trachea open.

Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous disorder. It occurs while you sleep. When you sleep, your neck, mouth and throat are extremely relaxed to the point it cuts of your breathing. While you may not be consiencously be aware of it, you stop breathing for a short period of time, then gasp for air. You may feel extremely tired when you wake up and this is because you are not getting the proper deep sleep from this. If you are overweight, loose weight. If you smoke, quit smoking. Only a doctor can diagnose sleep apnea via a sleep study. There is a machine out there that you can sleep with that forces air through your nose and this keeps the airway open. If you think you have sleep apnea, see your physician as soon as possible.

Yep you stop breathing for short periods of time in your sleep. YOu stop many times each minute. It is serious and snoring is often a good indicator that you might have it although not all with sleep apnea snore and not all snoring is from sleep apnea. If you know someone who snores though they need to see their doc to find out what is causing their snorning.
