Smaller the number, higher the rank.

They don't actually tell you this anywhere I could find, but a little sleuthing revealed the truth. I figured it out by pulling up "Double Cross" by James Patterson (currently #1 on the NY Times bestseller list)...it was ranked 22 on BN. Then I pulled up a book called Beyond Earth: The future of humans in space...its rank was 75,348...since I authored one of the chapters in this book and I know we haven't sold a lot of copies of the book (and will never make the NY Times bestseller list), this tells me that the smaller number means a higher ranking (more popular book).
