They are fantastic house dogs, they are average shedders and are energetic. Dogs aren't supposed to be hyper. They live around 9-12 years, which is short for a small dog because of their extensive list of health problems. If you are considering getting one, get one from a breeder who HEALTH TESTS, because they get horrible health problems. They are also on the higher side of the price range for dogs. Please do some more research before you get one. You need to get books and talk to reputable breeders and ask them questions. Go to a local dog show and there will be people there that can get you in the right direction.

Cavaliers are probably the Number One most friendly breed. They are also the Number One most likely to become overweight! You have to be so careful what you feed them - only the correct amount a high quality dog food, small amounts of dog treats and absolutely no human food!

They don't shed worse than any other dog as far as I know - they do have medium length hair so they do require grooming. They are small dogs, so you can expect them to live at least 12 years old, perhaps even up to 16 years IF healthy - and that's a big if, because they are very prone to congestive heart failure. Many Cavaliers are born with heart murmurs that develop into bigger problems later on. Good breeders will not breed from those with heart murmurs.

They can be hyper, but only with affection really. They only need medium amounts of exercise, they're not too demanding in that way, especially the tiny ones. Most enjoy a good cuddle more than anything. They're not ranked among the most intelligent i.e easy to train breeds, but of course they can learn all the basics, depends how much time you invest in this - but really they are a breed designed for companionship and affection. They should only really be acquired if there will be someone who can be with them most of the time.

You should be consulting books on these animals since you have all of these questions. The books you look at about the breed and care for the breed will answer all of your questions. Go to your local PetSmart and buy some books. That was what I did with Chihuahuas, since I want one some day.
