Don't have sex! LOL One out of four people have HSV2 (genital herpes) so the probability of you contracting it at some point during your lifetime is high. Nowadays HSV1 in the genital area is on the rise because of more people having oral sex(people with cold sores that is). The virus is spread from skin to skin contact NOT from the exchange of bodily fluid like HIV. Soooo..if a man has genital herpes at the base of his penis a condom isn't going to protect you. Anywhere that area touches during intercourse is susceptible to the herpes virus...thighs....buttocks etc..and vice versa for the ladies.

Oh yeah....and 90% of the people who have the virus don't even know they have it because they never experience an outbreak.
I suggest researching the virus http://www.cdc.gov/std/Herpes/STDFact-Herpes.htm
is a good site. :)

herpes is a viral disease. Herpes type 1, or simplex, is a result of having chicken pox as a child, it's the same virus, and it lives in your nerve tissue for the rest of your life, expressing itself thru cold sores.
Herpes type 2, or complex, is genital herpes, most often passed thru sexual contact, but can be self inflicted if you transmit the virust from coldsore to your genital region. Or from a coldsore during oral sex.
To prevent transmission, ALWAYS use a condom, and do not participate in oral sex. The virus can be transmitted at any time, not just when there is an active sore present.

herpes is a type of virus. There are many different herpes viruses that include chicken pox/shingles and cold sores.

It's contagious like any other virus. Genital herpes is contagious by skin to skin contact with an infected individual usually when the other person has an outbreak.

You can get cold sores from kissing someone with a cold sore, etc.

What type of herpes were you thinking of?

Herpes Simplex Virus, 1 and 2. They present as open ulcers either on the genitals or orally. Not coming in contact with open sores is the prevention...not having intercourse, kissing, or such with someone who has open sores. Once you have it, it stays dormant in your body and you can have an outbreak whenever. Prevention is key.
