I love my pets just as much as i love my kids. The answer would be keep the cat. Do without the tree. The cat is your baby. He or she was probably just bored.

Keep the cat, he's a friend to your son 12 months of the year and the tree is only up for a few weeks at best.
Get a small tree, one the cat will not even bother with. When the cat is a couple years older, Christmas trees will be old news and you can have a big one again.

Why not get a real tree until the cat settles? It's not likely he'll be able to tear it apart. Weight the base of the tree with an iron stand or use heavy hand weights.
And it really doesn't sound like you love this cat at all. If you think a tree is more important than the cat, please find the cat a new owner who doesn't think so.
If your child desperately wants a tree (which I understand) try the above suggestion- a real weighted-down one. Use non-breakable ornaments.
This would be a good opportunity to teach your child about how to compromise when someone we love makes things difficult. Or you could teach him animals are objects we can throw away when they become inconvenient. It's up to you.

Why would you even consider getting rid of your cat? That's harsh. I love Christmas and I HAVE to have a tree and I have 3 cats. I work it out. Put the tree in a room that the cat can't get into. Do something or do without a tree.
Artificial trees are terrible for the environment. Maybe your cat is trying to tell you something. ;o)

It's funny you ask. I have a 2 year old Bengal Cat. After reading about them, I decided not to have an indoor Christmas tree. After experiencing this wonderful cat, my decision was right. I decorate the pine tree in the back yard now. My other two cats would be fine with the tree. Many bengal owners hang their Christmas tree upside down from the ceiling in a corner of the house. You can have all your ornaments and kitty probably will not get into it. I miss my tree, but the one outside is LARGE. Give it a try before you hang the tree out to dry. : )

First of all your cat got upset when you left to stay with your mom. There is no reason that you can't train your cat to stay away from your tree. Make sure you place your cat somewhere when you leave so they can not get near your tree. When you are home allow the cat to be in the room with the tree only if you are present at the same time. If you see them bothering the tree squirt them with a spray bottle of water. It will get the hint sooner than later. I have three cats living with me and they know not to bother the tree. Good luck!

I cannot believe you would even think about getting rid of your cat at Christmas time- at all for that matter. Animal ownership is to be taken seriously. It is a fact that while owning an animal, it may do something that you don't like- like pee on your carpet, or rip apart your garbage can, or eat something you didn't want it to eat. Fake trees cost $20 at Joanne's- buy a new one. It is obvious that your cat has seperation anxiety- I would reccommend that you get another cat to keep the one you already have happy, but it seems like if it did something bad, you would just give up on it and give it away. If a fake tree means more to you than the life of your "precious" pet, you shouldn't own any animals.

Well we had an old spaniel mix dog who just loved to wag his tail.He would wag it so hard we could only put up the styrofoam coloured balls, runners and paper decorations.no hooks just strings.I tell you ball would fly around like a baseball training camp. The tail also meant we did not keep out candles or potpourri.Loved the dog, bless him and all his quirks just adjusted the decorations .Get another tree, maybe a less expensive tree (no string lights in case the cat chews them).Let your son help you decorate the tree .Maybe you can spritz the cat with a little water when she goes near the tree. Maybe she was bored or upset you left herIf you go out put the cat in a separate room as a precaution. I hope your mom is doing better .Take care.

would the 6 yr old care more about having a tree for a couple weeks or having the cat year round??
personally, i haven't bothered with a tree in a couple years. i hate messing with the things, i just put decorations up around the house. i don't have much room for a tree anyhow... and i have no idea how 2 of my 3 cats would even react to one, as they've never seen one... (the one does very well tho)

I would keep the cat, it didn't know any better. We have 5 cats & a prelit tree - luckily they haven't tried to climb the tree. Maybe next year you can find a spot to put the tree where the cat can't have access to it while you are not home... order one of those removable door screens or something depending on how your house is set up.
