Satanism is a quest for power that is evidence of a deeper underlying problem. You should find out why you want this power.
Psychologist Anthony Moriarity has discovered that basically four types of people become Satanists: psudeo-intellectuals, angry misfits, sucicidal-compulsive types, and psychotics.
If you become a Satanist, you won't get power. Anton LaVey was a liar, canniabal (by his own admission) , a wife beater, an extortionist, and a pimp who died bankrupt. He's not the kind of person a normal person would want to be.
You can read about the 33 myths of Anton LaVey, the 12 myths of Satanism, and the myth of the "Alien Elite" Satanist here:

My ex boyfriend was a La Vey Satanist, and for him I think it had both good and bad effects. Just like any religion.
I researched Satanism further to understand where he was coming from and his thought processes. I felt there are some valid points.
However, if someone is seeking a truly spiritual path (and I don't know if that is your thing or not) La Vey Satanism ain't it. Also some, but not all, of the practioners are into very negative, low-level occult theatrics that eventually backlash on them. Personally, I thought that was all a little beneath him. But it was his life, and his choices.
There are some Satanic ethics that I found he did not comply with. I guess if a movement is all about being rebels, it will attract some who just cannot be pinned down to any ethical system.
Of course, your own experience is yours.
PS: there was one other Satanist I knew, and he totally defended me when a Christian guy started verbally attacking me for practicing "witchcraft" -- I would like to thank him again and further thank any other Satanist who has ever helped me in need. I will not generalize based on my ex boyfriend's misbehavior.

Which type? Atheistic or Theistic?
Most Satanist are actually atheistic and use Satan as a symbol for self indulgence and to piss off the Christians.
REALLY cool people. *hugs Grim*
Well then you must now realize that most theistic Satanist (really rare by the way) aren't actually worshiping the Christian concept of Satan either. He is seen as an ancient pagan god who the Christians highjacked and twisted to thier own set of beliefs. Many see him as Set, the Egyptian god, but from what I understand Lucifer was actually a Mesopetamian or Babylonian god hence his name "Bringer of Light". He was the The Morning Star. Also, I THINK and don't qoute me because it's been a while, but in some of the orginial text, it wasn't really Satan, it was Samuel, who is part of Jewish texts, which makes sense since the OT is Jewish. If you read the Torah, the REAL OT you will see that a lot of changes have been made to back up the NT though. Which is sort of sad.....but anyways. Good luck

I'd take your own road...why be a part of a religion?
I might be a satanist if i actually read the book, and liked what it had to say, but the fact is that i haven't read it...only understood it explained by people like grim jack, and matt j..
theistic: you're just trading one evil for another, don't call yourself satanist, you'd then be a "devil worshipper" which is different...but good luck...

I assume you mean the THEISTIC version of Satanism because you said the word "religion". Atheism is not a religion, it is the disbelief in any god or demon....and pretty much anything supernatural.
IMO, Satanists (those who worship the biblical satan) are just as stupid as those who worship any god. It's all superstitous mumbojumbo that a bunch of dudes made up to take your money.
Try becoming a Humanist instead. Better yourself. Better mankind. Get out of the dark ages.

Strangely enough, this was the premise for my thesis while I was trying to get my doctorate degree. It is hard to find satantic Hungarians who live in Budapest to admit that they are left handed. The stigma is just too traumatic. Many just say that they are ambidextrous and leave it at that. They are a persecuted and misunderstood social sub-strata in much of Eastern Europe.

Satanism is basically a parody religion. They took some of the tenets of Christianity and warped them... and also took aspects from Wicca and twisted them as well...
Not that that's a bad thing...
For instance... Masses are a Catholic thing. Satan is a Christian concept... and the baphomet... the major symbol of Satanism... aside from the upside down cross... is an inverted pentagram. Also, the first law of Satanism... "Do as thou wilst"... that's half the Wiccan Rede... which states "An it harm none, do as thou wilst".
It's entirely up to you how you choose to spend your spiritual life. But I've personally known Satanists who were really good people.

While I can't answer your question from a worshipper's point of view, as an academic I have studied Satanism and the so called "Black Arts" for many years. Anton LaVey who founded The Church of Satan in San Francisco wrote a number of books as did some of his members. His philosophy is essentially a form of humanism. He had a vehement hatred for Christianity. He did believe in Satan as a spiritual being and called upon him not only in worship situations but other dire situations as well.
My main problem with his ideas is that he has misappropriated a number of "dieties" as part of his "Infernal Names." For example he lists Damballa (misspelled), Hecate, Ishtar, Kali, O-Yama (misspelled), Sekhemet, and Shiva. Within the traditions these dieties come from:
Damballah (Voudou), Hecate (Greek Mythology), Ishtar (Mesopotamian Mythology), Kali (Hinduism), Yama (Buddhism), Sekhemet (Egyptian Mythology), and Shiva (Hinduism), these gods & goddesses are NOT evil.
In Fact Kali and Shiva are the very opposite of the philosophy and ideas that LaVey embraced. His ignorance and I dare say disrespect of these deities is appalling. He also omits powerful evil figures from European Mythology, such as Naktis Velnias or "Mistress of the Night," a powerful female devil from Lithuania prior to it's conversion to Christianity.
Given that he got something so fundamental to his faith so terribly wrong, I am loathe to trust him on other things he says.
He also admits to having his "curses" claim innocent victims, including Jayne Mansfield who was horribly decapitated in a car accident.
A competent black magician would have been more careful and wouldn't have had any "collateral damage."
There are several smaller Satanic groups I have read books on. The Temple of Set has been very elusive though. Most seem to follow LaVey to some degree.
I will pose this question, why Satan? While I cannot say I have had personal encounters with him, I have had what I will describe as contact with "supernatural evil." These beings were nothing but malevolent and terrifying. They "serve" no one. In fact it might be good to reflect on the line from the Police song "wrapped around your finger." It says "I will turn your face to alabaster, when you find your servant is your master."
There is an entire world of beliefs and more positive and constructive spiritualities to explore. Why do you wish to embrace something so negative?
If you decide to do this you better go in with your eyes wide open and you had damn well better know what you are getting yourself into. This is nothing to take lightly. When I was young I was seduced by spiritual beings I believed were benevolent. They were not. They turned me into a hateful and dangerous boy. Had others not seen what was happening I would have been totally taken over and would have lost my self completely. Are you willing to take that risk?
The Black Arts are powerful and indeed those who have recourse to them can gain what they want so long as it fits the philosophy of Evil. But nothing is free. Satan will gladly give you a credit card with no limit and no monthly payments. One day, he will come calling with a bill and the fine print and on that day you will realize just how stupid you really were to trust him.
I have shared with you both my objective and subjective experiences. I have been as forthright as I can be.
I am certainly open to discuss further, it's up to you. E-mail me if you like.
May you find a spiritual path that will bring you peace in life and liberate rather than enslave you.
