I did an interview last Thursday and on Monday, I wrote the company a follow up/ thank you letter. When can I expect an answer? Do most company write back or call back when people write a follow up letter? What were your experiences?

Its entirely up to the company and whomever is responding.

My experience has been unless you are going to be hired, most companies don't bother with the common courtesy of letting you know the position has been filled. If you don't hear back within a week then assume they have hired someone else. That is a pet peeve of mine...I feel that since we take the time out to go for the interview and follow up with them, they should at least let the candidates know they have not been selected...even receiving a standard form letter would be better than nothing.

When it comes to interviewing and finding out about the status of a job, companies can never respond too quickly.

The hiring process is a burden to begin with. Once they choose their candidate, they will extend an offer and usually there is a waiting period before the candidate accepts the offer.

Know that companies like to do their hiring at the last minute. It's like any of us who put an undesirable task last on our lists.

I do not respond to follow up thank you letters from candidates, unless there is a question regarding the position. When a decision has been made, regardless of the decision, I contact the person at that time and let them know what we decided.

If you didn't get the job, you may not get any reply at all. That's not uncommon these days. You can always wait a week and call them to see if a decision has been made, and reiterate your interest then.
