Is it okay to just quit feeding my cats canned food? They eat dry food as well but I just recently heard that canned food is bad for them but I would feel bad just taking it away. Is it okay or is that just some b/s?

canned cat food is actually closer to the cat's natural pray meal, and is better. You want to stay away from those with a lot of fillers of wheat rice, etc.. you want products that start out with meat as one of the first ingredients.

Kibble is pretty much the same as McDonalds food is to humans. they spray fats and flavoring on to the kibble to get cats to eaet it. I foster kittens, and most kittens don't recognize dry as food - they try to use it as litter

more and more studies are being done, and they all come to the conclusion that there are too many carbs in dry food..

It is okay, as long as they drink water. Most cats don't drink much water so if they don't get wet food they can end up dehydrated

My cat does fine on just dry, and many of the cats I take care of are on all dry diets, some get a bit of canned every other day as a treat, but most of them are dry food only

If your cats are currently on an all canned diet suddenly switching to all dry might not be a good idea, you might want to slowly wean them off canned onto dry

I haven't heard about canned food being bad for cats though, I mean sure the recalled stuff was but I've never heard of any reason why all canned food is bad. Would you mind sharing where you heard that?

Canned food is better for cats than dry food. You just need to brush their teeth more.

See, cats have a low thirst drive because they naturally obtain the vast majority of their water from their FOOD not from their LIQUID INTAKE. A cat on kibble will drink more water, but the total water intake will be less than a cat eating canned food or raw frozen. If you feed exclusively kibble the cat will be chronically dehydrated, resulting in concentrated urine and weakening the kidneys.

Keep your kitties on their current diet and they'll be fine (as long as the brand is high-quality, not Iams, Purina, Science Diet, Eukanuba, or anything else with wheat, corn, soy, BHT, BHA, Ethoxyquin, beet pulp, or byproducts).

I've heard just the opposite, that dry catfood is not good for your cats. Cats don't drink a lot of water (by itself) and often get urinary tract problems. My vet has told me that wet catfood is much better for cats because they get some of the extra moisture they need through the catfood. I guess if you had to just stick your tongue into a glass of water when you're thirsty, you probably wouldnt drink water much either!. The dry catfoods, even the best, most expensive kind, aren't as good as the wet catfoods. It used to be that people thought giving the cats only wet food would make their teeth bad - and I suppose that may contribute to bad teeth but years ago, nobody took their cat to the vet to get their teeth cleaned either. Anyway, if your cats are eating wet food and dry food, consider yourself lucky, because most cats will only eat one or the other.!

Recently I've been hearing and reading that canned food is actually much better for them than dry. I was always told the opposite was true because dry food was supposed to clean their teeth, but it's a myth (apparently). I'm considering switching mine to wet food...

The link below is an article about the myths about pet food. Item 2 talks about dry food vs wet food, especially in relation to a pet's teeth. I found it most informative.

If you want give your cat dry food you should slowly give it away. For breakfast canned food, lunch a small amount of dry food, and dinner more dry with a small amount of canned food on a different plate.

It's complete BS. I don't know what exactly you heard or if it had to do with the pet food recalls or something else.

But canned food is very good for cats and dry food is what isn't so good for them.

So keep on with the canned.

Some people feed cats only kibble.

I think its still wise to feed the cat some wet food there are different enzymes, fatty acids and taurines that cats need.

You can make your own cat food if you like. Feed the cat regular meat.

I suggest you give away the tinned food S-L-O-W-L-Y. I used to give my pet cat tinned food until I realised it had colour and flavour and preservative in it. I did the wrong thing and changed the diet immediately. My cat refused the new dry food for about 4 days until it grew very hungry and just ate the food anyway. So you should very slowly decrease the amount of tinned food till there is just dry food on the plate.
