Alvin Ailey - great choreographer who founded the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. After he died it was taken over by his greatest dancer Judith Jamison. The company still exists and in fact has a new building in Hell's Kitchen on the far West Side of Manhattan. They also have a dance school. The perform at NY City Center and tour extensively.

Alvin Ailey is a modern arts choreographer. Started his own dance troupe in the 1950's (I believe). As a company they bring the preforming arts to inner city schools. It is an african american company preforming often to jazz classics in a modern creative format. The current preformers are mostly veterans of his creation-and really great people to meet. My mother has worked with them from time to time. and thier shows are incredible.

I wish his dancers were better. More technical I mean. An entirely black dance company is a neat concept and I like his choreography but I still wish the dancers were a little better.
