There was a great book by the Harvard Medical School on back pain, and it said most surgery is unnecessary. It said that back exercises are much more effective at correcting the problem by strengthening the muscles of the spine. They had several listed that really helped me. The Japanese rarely get the same back problems because of all the bowing they do, it can be a perfect exercise for the spine.

sounds bizzare I know but it works- Chinese Dr told me ALWAYS wear socks/tights even when you wear trousers/jeans and it has helped solve my back problems I've had for years.
