Whats a better option once you got Catalina island during the last week of December .. take a guided tour or just walk through the Avalon and explore yourselves.

Depending on how long you will be there, I say: do both!
Avalon is a nice downtown area you could probably spend the majority of a day just walking around and hanging out on the beach. But there are also other interesting sights and animals on the island ( like Buffalo!) that Im pretty sure you can only see if you take the tour bus.
If you want to see the whole island, do both

I agree with the other responders almost all the hotels are older and do not have kitchens They are nice I have stayed at several and they are all lovely just not your typical 5 star more the boutique type of place.I would suggest that maybe you look into renting a condo or a house for 4 or 5 days that way you can get the kitchen and the tub you wan t also don t have to worry about thin walls LOL Try contacting a real estate agent there on Catalina and find out about rental properties Good luck have fun

You can cover all of Avalon on foot. But they do have tram tours of the rest of the island where you can see bison, endangered foxes, bald eagles etc. You can also rent a golf cart to drive around Avalon and some of the hillsides (however golf carts are not allowed in the interior part of the island). This is why a tram tour is suggested as you cannot get to much of the interior on your own.

Avalon is small so you can you walk around downtown. They have little golf cart tours in the summer that take you up the hills and show you some of the sites. I'd recommend that so you don't miss anything.

Rent a golf cart and drive around. It's the most exciting way to see the island.

if you are NOT AT ALL AFRAID OF HEIGHTS take the inland motor tour...its sprctacular views
