You got it. Jesus said it because He existed BEFORE Abraham. THAT is why the Jews sought to stone Him for blasphemy, and why all religions (minus Christianity) are picking up the same stones today.
John 10
"I and My Father are one."
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."

Jesus was making the point to those questioning Him, that He had existed before Abraham. The words "I AM" refer back to Exodus 3 where Moses heard God say, "I AM THAT I AM".
Jesus is God in the flesh. When He was born, He once and for all took a body of flesh just like ours. He was completely human: He was hungry, thirsty, tired, and subject to all of the normal human functions. But He was also God: He healed people, fed multitudes if people, raised some from the dead, and forgave sins. Plus He accepted worship on several occasions.
Why not read the entire eigth chapter of John's Gospel and get even more of the story?

In Christianity also Jesus is not God. At least in primitive Christianity.
AT JOHN 8:58 a number of translations, for instance The Jerusalem Bible, have Jesus saying: “Before Abraham ever was, I Am.” Was Jesus there teaching, as Trinitarians assert, that he was known by the title “I Am”? And, as they claim, does this mean that he was Jehovah of the Hebrew Scriptures, since the King James Version at Exodus 3:14 states: “God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM”?
At Exodus 3:14 (KJ) the phrase “I AM” is used as a title for God to indicate that he really existed and would do what he promised. The Pentateuch and Haftorahs, edited by Dr. J. H. Hertz, says of the phrase: “To the Israelites in bondage, the meaning would be, ‘Although He has not yet displayed His power towards you, He will do so; He is eternal and will certainly redeem you.’ Most moderns follow Rashi [a French Bible and Talmud commentator] in rendering [Exodus 3:14] ‘I will be what I will be.’”
The expression at John 8:58 is quite different from the one used at Exodus 3:14. Jesus did not use it as a name or a title but as a means of explaining his prehuman existence. Hence, note how some other Bible versions render John 8:58:
1869: “From before Abraham was, I have been.” The New Testament, by G. R. Noyes.
1935: “I existed before Abraham was born!” The Bible—An American Translation, by J. M. P. Smith and E. J. Goodspeed.
1965: “Before Abraham was born, I was already the one that I am.” Das Neue Testament, by Jörg Zink.
1981: “I was alive before Abraham was born!” The Simple English Bible.
1984: “Before Abraham came into existence, I have been.” New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures.
Thus, the real thought of the Greek used here is that God’s created “firstborn,” Jesus, had existed long before Abraham was born.—Colossians 1:15; Proverbs 8:22, 23, 30; Revelation 3:14.
Again, the context shows this to be the correct understanding. This time the Jews wanted to stone Jesus for claiming to “have seen Abraham” although, as they said, he was not yet 50 years old. (Verse 57) Jesus’ natural response was to tell the truth about his age. So he naturally told them that he “was alive before Abraham was born!”—The Simple English Bible.

You can't quote the Book of John in making a case against Islam. Unless your intolerance is such that it doesn't allow you to accept people of faiths different than yours.
Last I checked.. the book of John holds no place whatsoever in Islam. Its like a Muslim saying, the Koran says Jesus is a prophet, not the son of God, so how can Christians justify that?
apples and oranges.

It's the bloomin 'christians' that make it so hard to understand. But for their hard-headed insistence that Jesus is God himself, instead of who he claimed to be, God's son, this wouldn't be a problem.
Even all the angels existed before Abraham! Of course Jesus did also, he was the firstborn of all creation, the first created being. Who was created before the other angels even.
Silly, unwilling to learn, the so-called 'christians' are like the blind leading the blind. In fact, this is what Jesus said of the religious leaders of his day:
(Matthew 15:14) . . .Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.
Nothing has changed, today's religious leaders keep perpetuating these fallacies... can they be anything different than they were in Jesus' time!

Jesus was telling them who He is. Jesus is proclaiming Himself as the great I AM. If we believe that the Bible is the word of God, then we must believe what it says. If Jesus say I AM, what else is there to believe? Islam denies Jesus is the Messiah, in a sense they are nothing more or less than the Pharisees who questioned Him back when He walked the earth.

It's one of the verses commonly used to support the divinity of Jesus is John 8:58: “Jesus said unto them, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.’ ” This verse is taken to imply that Jesus existed prior to his appearance on earth. The conclusion drawn from it is that Jesus must be God, since his existence predates his birth on earth. However, the concept of the pre-existence of the prophets, and of man in general, exists in both the Old Testament, as well as in the Qur‘an. Jeremiah described himself in The Book of Jeremiah 1:4-5 as follows: “Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ ”
Prophet Solomon is reported in Proverbs 8:23-27, to have said, “Ages ago I was set up at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were…; before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was there.”
According to Job 38:4 and 21, God addresses Prophet Job in a similar way. Consequently, Prophet Jesus’ statement, “Before Abraham was, I am,” cannot be used as evidence of his divinity. Within the context of John 8:54-58, Jesus is purported to have spoken about God’s knowledge of His prophets, which predates the creation of this world.

Reply to Omilo: The answer you gave is incorrect. Even the Jews recognized his claim as God and sought to stone him for making himself God by those words. He was before Abraham, and thus was God. No sons of God preexisted Abraham in any form, for they are his children if they are of faith. In addition, Jesus singled himself out from Israel as the great "I AM", beyond time, as opposed to them that were the creation of God.
In reply to those arguing that the pre-existence of prophets is interpreted the same as "I AM": The phrase means that the entity is beyond time, whilst those prophets being part of the creation were not. Thus, one can not logically equate pre-existent prophets with the everexisting God, for they unlike God had a beginning: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:3)

Not only God almighty was before abraham but also all the sons of God according to Job 38:4-7.
Job 38:4-7 "Where did you happen to be when I founded the earth?
Tell [me], if you do know understanding.
5 Who set its measurements, in case you know,
Or who stretched out upon it the measuring line?
6 Into what have its socket pedestals been sunk down,
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars joyfully cried out together,
And all the sons of God began shouting in applause?

All of the heavenly creatures and God were alive well before Adam and Eve according to the bible. So, hows does Christ saying that he was before Abraham prove that he is God?
Edit: You and your kind, you know the ones that don't research anything for themselves, give people like Bubba above every right to point you out as foolish. God gave you two ears and one mouth, what does that tell you in regards to their proper use?
