Down my corridor there is a flat with a young mum probably about 27 she has a 9 year old, earlier i was sitting on my balcony & i could hear crying i looked over the edged to her balcony & she was crying, i took her a mug of coffee & she told me about how last night her daughter has these tantrums, The mother had just found out her daughters father had stopped paying money into the benefit account, also she was facing redundancy and all her daughter could think about was christmas cards, she is quite a small woman &she said her daughter stood up and pulled a hissy fit, & the poor mother had asked her to do it tomorrow the daughter said no & the mother lashed out slapping her child. I was shocked to hear this becuase i have only known her for a short while but i know they love each other dearly & they always are best friends, she is just worried because she thinks it Child abuse but if it's just that once & even if it's happened before she's not really really hurt, is it Child abuse? x

Firstly. Well done you for showing concern.

Are you old enough to take this 9yo for an hour or so to give the mum a break?
Where is Dad? do you know?

If the money worries are also getting on top of Mum I think she really does need some time to herself even if it is just for an hour or so.

If you can help her, then please try to.
I dont think you should necessarily take this to the authorities just yet, as if it has only been the once, well maybe. But if you hear it going on for much longer then definately it wouldnt hurt to ask a local health visitor to step in.
Have they no after school clubs in her area?
Does the child have friends where she could go and have tea and then mum return the favour at some point?

Lots of questions I know, but the more you know the better really and the more that you can help

Make some suggestions to her and see what she says. If she only has child company she may be in need of some 'adult conversation'
Talk to her. Ask her if you can help.
PROVIDING YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO

No, but the woman needs to remember to control her temper. Striking a child is never the way to solve a problem.
She just has a lot of stress right now and is probably quite worried about her future as well as her childs. Sad to hear but little you can really do. Just be there for her and see if you get her some help....

My mom slapped my face many times when I was young, they called it discipline then. I turned out fine and have always loved my Mother.

No i don't think so, every child needs a smack once in awhile. Although if she beats on her or smacks her around alot thats abuse.
