stop talking back to him. Only give him attention when he isn't meowing, and don't give him food when he is meowing.. Do not give him any attention what so ever when he's meowing. feel free to lock in the bathroom when he starts at 4am (do not leave there overnight)
lot of work especially if he is overly talkitive..
Some cats just like the sound of their own voice, and there is nothing you can do but get used to it.

that'll drive ya nuts! the other answers about changing feeding time are right. That usually works. The other suggestion I have is to play with him some before you go to bed, to tire him out alittle bit. Cats get into habits like that (meowing in the middle of the night) and it is really hard to break them of it. you might also try earplugs while you're sleeping.

I've been asking myself the same thing. My two mutt cats are fine, but the purebred Bengal, well he's different and after my husband leaves he start a very weird meow, like "where is everybody? Wake up and play" or "feed me I 'm a starving kitty on the brink of death". Silly cat. I love him.

He's hungry! Here's my trick, I feed my cats in 12 hr. intervals. If I want to sleep in late (esp. on weekends), I delay feeding them the night before to say 9 or 10 pm. That way they give me 12 hrs. or so before they start buggin. If your feeding him @ 4 pm the night before, than 4 am sounds about right for a wake up call. My other tip would be to close your bedroom door.

Some "caterwauling" (pardon the pun) is caused by animal instincts to seek a mate and "broadcast" its territorial boundaries to other cats. If your pet hasn't been neutered, do so, as that will reduce, if not eliminate that instinct (you should do it, anyway, to prevent unwanted litters).
Some pets happen to have very strict "clocks", so to speak. He might be trying to tell you to let it outside or to feed it, etc. Try changing its feeding and/or "call to nature" times.

When mine got into the habit of doing that, I figured out he was just hungry and didn't want to wait to eat. I started feeding him right before I went to bed. Now he leaves me alone until I get up on my own (at 6am)

Your cat just loves you! He just wants attention! Try getting up and feeding him, my cat's usually wake me up real early in the morning to be fed (they will stop at nothing to wake me!) and then they usually calm down after that.
