My extended family has some strange practices. Due to a couple of divorces, some of them have decided that spouses shouldn’t be allowed in group photos. (They are a *strange* bunch…) I disagree, but I don’t care enough to fight them and my husband doesn’t really care. My sister-in-law (an excluded spouse) has whined about to me, and sometimes makes comments about the practice when photos are being arranged.

Here’s the issue:

I have two brothers and three nephews (two were born this year), and I don’t have any pictures of just my brothers and their kids. When we celebrate Christmas in a couple of weeks, I want to take a pic of just my five boys. My other sister-in-law won’t care, but the complainer from above probably will.

How should I explain this to the complainer? Or should I just tell my brothers to pose and hope she says nothing?
Or am I actually being as nuts as the extended family?

Take more than a few pictures!
Take 50, they are digital. Take some with the spouses, without them, with the children and without them, brothers, nephews you name it. Then keep the ones you want.

I think you just need to explain to this person that you want a picturew ofd the guys no ladies allowed that this is a special photo representing the men in your family. I think if she cannot understand that she is a loon and tell her just leave if she is going to be a prude. I think it is important and good for memeories for you to get a photo like this. Tell her there willl be many family and extended family photos this christmas but this is for your boys only. Really alot of people get photos of just certain family members or just the kids it is normal this person sounds a little crazy.

God Bless and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

If its a family portrait for the wall, I would understand wanting only certain members of the family in it. If its just the 2007 family Christmas picture for the photo album, it is ridiculous, rude, and unloving to exclude married spouses who are not blood relatives.

That being said, if you want an additional picture of your 2 brothers and their sons, that would be fine.

I agree with the spouses not being in family pictures. Why not just pull them to the side and snap the picture. Or take two. Take one with everyone, then just the men. She could dig on that.

I hate to be harsh, but I would say I just want one of my brother with his children. If that becomes a problem just take the kids and photo shop it.
